Description
The MAX487 is a low-power transceiver for RS-485 and RS422 communication. One driver and one receiver are present in each component. The MAX487 has decreased slew-rate drivers that reduce reflections from incorrectly terminated cables and limit EMI, enabling error-free data transmission at speeds of up to 250kbps. MAX1487 is not limited, allowing them to transmit up to 2.5Mbps.
When empty or fully loaded with deactivated drivers, these transceivers consume between 120A and 500A of supply current. The MAX487 also includes a low-current shutdown mode where it uses just 0.1 A. A single 5V supply powers every component. The thermal shutdown circuitry, which converts the driver outputs into a high-impedance condition, limits the short-circuit current of the drivers and protects them from excessive power dissipation. If the receiver input is open circuit, a fail-safe mechanism ensures a logic-high output. The MAX487 and MAX1487 feature quarter-unit-load receiver input impedance, allowing up to 128 MAX487/MAX1487 transceivers on the bus. MAX487 is designed for half-duplex applications.
